Tom Brady was one of the greatest quarterbacks in the NFL this period despite playing with a stress fracture in his right foot. With the Patriots eliminated from the postseason last weekend by the New York Jets, Brady has taken the occasion to make sure he’s 100% next year. On Thursday, Brady had surgery to calm his injured foot at a Boston area hospital. The procedure was not considered grave and he’s expected to make a full recovery well before the start of training camp for the 2011 NFL season. Brady had a screw inserted in the navicular bone in an attempt to prevent the stress fracture in his foot from pain any more harm that would result in a full fracture. The first concern is that the screw does not break early in the recovery method, which will necessitate Brady wearing a walking boot for about six weeks. After that, he’s expected to increasingly resume his regular training regimen and every belief is that he’ll be fully recovered by the start of training camp if not earlier.

Doctors familiar with this process stressed the substance of the recovery process. Dr. Michael Kaplan noted that a broken screw is ‘worst case situation’:

“It’s not a big ordeal, but it is an amazing recovery. You can’t stress this area until it’s done healing or prematurely load it because you don’t want the screw to break. If you break the screw, it would be terrible.”

Kaplan justified the goal of the procedure:

“The stress he put on that mid foot makes it hard to heal. So their curiosity is to get this [healing process] on its style, and the best tactic to do that is a compression screw across the fracture sight, pulling two ends of the bone together, securing it stable and giving it the best milieu for healing.”

Pennsylvania orthopedic surgeon Dr. Nicholas DiNubile suggested this insight:

“You have to turn down the volume on the foot. But that doesn’t mean the entire body has to rest, so he could ingeniously design workouts for his upper body and core, such as water running.”

“Stress fractures in the foot are a main issue with dancers; I’ve seen a lot over the years. The far popular does OK, but you can’t keep pounding on it. You have to let the body do the healing and don’t interfere with it. Sometimes the bone doesn’t heal and it requires surgeries or multiple surgeries, and it can be career-threatening. But that’s not common.”

The Patriots entered the playoffs as the NFL betting favorite to triumph the Super Bowl before a shocking upset to the New York Jets on their home field. It was the second straight year that New England was reduced from the playoffs on their own field.
